Adoption
Adoption is all about giving a loving home to a child who otherwise cannot have such a home for various reasons.
The adoptive parent(s) take on the rights and responsibilities which would usually be held by the birth parents. The adopted child takes the name of the adoptive family.
Applications
You need to be at least 21 in order to adopt. Applications can be accepted from married couples or single people. If you are living together, but are not married only one partner can apply to adopt. You may be childless or you may already have children.
There are very few young babies awaiting adoption, but there are older children and groups of brothers and sisters who need adoptive families.
Very few of the children placed for adoption today are 'straight forward', and adopters must be willing to accept a number of complicated background factors which will contain elements of risk in terms of the child's future development.
