Education Maintenance Allowances

Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) is a weekly allowance of up to £30 per week (dependant on household income) payable during term time, with additional bonuses of £150 paid for attendance and achievement. These allowances are paid to the young person, directly into a bank account.
For session 2009/10 EMAs will apply to all eligible pupils whose birthdays falls between 1st March 1990 and 28th February 1994, inclusive, who are at secondary school and are willing to participate in an approved learning agreement at school for a minimum of 21 hours per week.
The young person must hold a bank account in his/her own name.
The EMA is only paid for full weeks within term time up to a maximum of 42 weeks in any one academic year. It can only be paid for when 100% attendance has been achieved by the young person.
Payment of an EMA is restricted to a maximum of 3 years. However, some young people with Special Educational Needs may be entitled to receive 3 years EMA support over a 4 year period.
Young people from families who receive Income Support are also eligible for Free School Meals. Please contact Facilities Schools and Welfare Team for more details.
