The Education Scotland Act 1980 states:
"It shall be the duty of the parent of every child of school age to provide sufficient education for him suitable to his age ability and aptitude either by causing him to attend a public school regularly or by other means."
Most parents choose to enrol their child/children in a local authority or independent school in order to fulfil their duty under the Act. Others opt to fulfil their duty by choosing to home educate.
If you opt to choose home education, please write to the Head of Education who will arrange a visit from an Education Officer. The address is noted at the bottom of this page.
Guidance for parents and local authorities on home education is available on the Scottish Government website.
Parents and carers can also contact Schoolhouse Home Education Assocation, Scotland's national home education support charity, for further information.
