Flood MarchglenWatercourse Maintenance

The Roads and Transportation Team carries out the Council's obligation to ensure that sensitive watercourses are inspected and maintained to minimise the incidence of flooding of land. This involves operating cyclical inspections and maintenance of sensitive watercourses and the clearance of any debris collected at structures across watercourses.

We also monitor weather forecast information from the Met Office and flood warnings from Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) to help us prepare, where possible, sensitive watercourses in advance of extreme rainfall events.

Through our maintenance regime and professional analysis of our sensitive watercourses we aim to develop improvement programmes to reduce flood risk to property along the rivers, burns and other sensitive watercourses in Clackmannanshire.

Sources of Help and Information During Flood Events

We monitor areas liable to flooding, assess flooding problems, carry out flood maintenance works and offer advice to help reduce flood risk.

If you have any information relating to flooding from burns, ditches or any other sources, please email us at roads@clacks.gov.uk

Flooding Road ClosedNew Flooding Road Signs

During the severe storm event in January 2008, all major road links across the River Devon were cut off for a time causing a lot of problems for the travelling public.

Advising drivers that these routes were flooded on the night required a lot of time and expense and indeed before all the signage could be put out, some drivers had attempted to pass through flooded areas, became stuck, and had to be rescued.

To prevent this in the future, the council has erected permanent advisory road signs on these routes. The signs are hinged in a manner which allows them to be blank faced or warning of "Flood - Road Closed".

When the "Flood - Road Closed" signs need to be displayed, this can be done quickly by council staff, allowing more time for other emergency actions. The council hopes these signs will assist the travelling public to choose alternate safe routes during these storm events.

When the flood sign is in operation these roads, where crossing the River Devon, will be impassible, but access to and from north or south residential areas can be achieved through various alternative routes.
